'Sir Edward Clarke, Q.C.', c1899. Portrait of British barrister and politician Sir Edward George Clarke(1841-1931), Solicitor-General in the Conservative government of 1886-1892. Clarke represented Oscar Wilde in his disastrous prosecution of the Marquess of Queensberry for libel, and he also represented the plaintiff in the 'baccarat case', in which he cross-examined the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII).
