'Battle of Long Island - Retreat of the Americans under General Stirling Across Gowanus Creek', (1877). Battle (also known as the Battle of Brooklyn Heights) fought on 27 August 1776, the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War to take place after the United States declared its independence on 4 July 1776.
