'The Death of Washington', (1877). George Washington on his deathbed, Mount Vernon, Virginia, USA, 14 December 1799. Washington (1732-1799), general of the Continental troops during the Revolutionary War, and the first President of the United States, died after catchingt a cold which developed into a throat infection. His doctors bled him, blistered him, and tried unsuccessfully to make him gargle with 'molasses, vinegar, and butter'.
