'Opening of the Centennial Exhibition, May 4, 1876', (1878). The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, the first official World's Fair in the United States, was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 10 May to 10 November 1876. The Art Gallery, (now known as the Memorial Hall), the only large building to survive on the Centennial site, was designed by Herman J Schwarzmann in the beaux-arts style.
