'The "Woolly Bear".', (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: 'A shrapnel shell bursts overhead the first-line trenches. The form of this shell-burst has not inaptly been called the "woolly bear" by the British soldier. The heavy cloud of shell-bursts on the distant German lines clearly indicates a certain "liveliness" on the British front.' From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. V, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]
