'Marshal Foch', (1919). Portrait of Marshal Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929), French general and Allied Supreme Commander in World War I. Foch was chosen as supreme commander of the Allied armies on 26 March, 1918, five days after the start of the German Spring Offensive, which threatened to end the war in Germany's favour. In July 1918 Foch stopped the German advance at the Second Battle of the Marne, finally turning the tide of the war decisively in the Allies' favour, for which he was made a Marshal of France. From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. IX, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]
