'Professor Treitschke', (1919). Portrait of German historian and political writer Heinrich Gotthard von Treitschke (1834-1896). Treitschke was an outspoken nationalist, who favoured German colonialism and opposed the British Empire. 'The greatest modern German historian, whose writings and influence have created the scornful antipathy and public opinion against England in Germany. It is probable war would never have taken place without him. He has earnestly preached the supersession of England's supremacy by Germany and of the future of Germany as a great world Power.' From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. I, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]
