Paul Gonsalves (tenor sax) and Lawrence Brown (trombone), rehearsal for a Sacred Concert, Cambridge, 1967. On February 20, 1967, Duke Ellington’s 15-piece ensemble, featuring many of jazz’s all-time greats, played a two-hour special concert in Cambridge. 1,300 people packed into the church, for the one-off show; which featured tap-dancing, and a lengthy drum solo. As well as Ellington at the keyboard, other star players on the night included trumpet player Cat Anderson, saxophonist Johnny Hodges, drummer Rufus ‘Speedy’ Jones, and Esther Marrow on vocals.
