January - dinner at New Year, 15th century, (1939). The old man sitting and drinking from a bowl symbolises Janus, the god of gates and transitions. Two women, one richly dressed, stand at the table. One servant has with a cloth on his shoulder and the other is about to fill a ewer. Through a doorway a woman is heating a pot of water on the fire. Detail of a page from the "Heures de Charles d'Angoulême", a book of hours commissioned by Charles of Orléans (1459-1496), with miniatures mostly painted by Robinet Testard, and now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. Published in "Verve - No. 8, Vol. II". [Verve, France, 1939]
