'Crossing the River of Death', c1910. The River of Death that surrounds the Celestial City on Mount Zion is deeper or shallower depending on the faith of the one traversing it. Scene from "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan. Glass lantern slide produced by the Church Army Lantern Department which in 1905 had approximately 100,000 such slides. These were available for hire, and were also taken round the country in special vans, to be shown to groups of people for evangelical purposes.
