Paul Doumer, President of the French Republic, assassinated on 6 May 1932. 'Monsieur Paul Doumer, Président de la République Francaise, assassiné le 6 Mai 1932'. French president Paul Doumer (1857-1932) was shot by Russian émigré Paul Gorguloff at a book fair at the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris. Author Claude Farrère wrestled with Gorguloff until police arrived. Doumer died in hospital the following day, the only French president to die of a gunshot wound. Gorguloff was found guilty after the jury rejected the idea that he was insane, and was executed in Paris by guillotine. Front cover of "L'Illustré du Petit Journal". [France, 15 May 1932]
