Barbarossa bids farewell as he leaves on his crusade, 1189, (1936). Barbarossas Abschied Vor Seiner Kreuzfahrt, 1189'. Frederick I Barbarossa (1123-1190), Holy Roman Emperor, embarked on the Third Crusade (1189-1192) to reconquer the Holy Land after the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin. Barbarossa never got to Jerusalem - he drowned in the Saleph river near Silifke Castle (present-day southern Turkey).
