Luther as Junker Jörg in the Jena Inn with Swiss students, 1522, (1936). 'Luther Als Junker Jörg Im "Bären" Zu Jena Mit Schweizer Studenten, 1522'. German priest and scholar Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a major inspiration behind the Reformation. He was excommunicated by Pope Leo IX in 1521 and declared an outlaw at the Diet of Worms. Emperor Charles V placed him under an imperial ban and his life was in danger, so he disguised himself as an aristocratic named Junker Jörg. Under the protection of the Elector of Saxony, Luther produced a German translation of the Bible, and he went on to found the Lutheran Protestant Church.
