German battery attack from the beach at Eckernförde, 5 April 1849, (1936). 'Deutsche Strandbatterien Bei Eckernförde, 5 April 1849'. During the First War of Schleswig, the Danish ships 'Christian VIII' and the frigate 'Gefion' tried to land in Eckernförde on the Baltic coast of Germany. They were attacked by cannon fire from the shore. The Christian VIII exploded, while the Gefion surrendered and was captured.
