German staff officer Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin (1838-1917), adjutant of the King of Württemberg, carried out a reconnaissance mission behind enemy lines near Schirlenhof, (Gundershoffen, France), during which he narrowly avoided capture.
