'Charlemagne Causing the Saxons to be Baptised in the Weser', (782AD), 1890. Charlemagne (742-814) King of the Franks prescribed death to Saxon pagans who refused to convert to Christianity, 4,500 prisoners were beheaded in the Massacre of Verden.
