'The box, which served her as a shield, was speedily cut in two...', 1919. '...and there appeared, unfolding and fluttering in the breeze as they fell, a little winding-sheet, and a sacred banner used for the dead, bearing in black hieroglyphics, the inscription, "Namu Amida Butsu!" (All hail, Great Buddha!)'. Takebe attempts to kill Kotaro's mother O Chiyo, but stops when he realises that she has brought ritual items because she anticipated the murder of her son, whose head was substituted for that of Kanshusai, the son of the Lord Sugawara. Illustration to "Loyal, Even Unto Death, or The Sugawara Tragedy", a story in "Romances of Old Japan", by Madame Yukio Ozaki. [Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd, London, 1919]
