Holy War is pronounced at the Fatih Mosque, Constantinople, Turkey, 14 November 1914, (c1920). 'The Fetwa of the Sheikh-ul-Islam: How the Holy War was proclaimed in Constantinople'. Sheikh Al­Islam Ürgüplü Hayri Bey, the supreme religious authority in the Ottoman Empire, issues a fatwa declaring an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ottoman government. In it he urges his Muslim followers to take up arms against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro in the First World War.
