The sinking of the Falaba, First World War, 28 March 1915, (c1920). '...how the Elder-Dempster liner was torpedoed by the German submarine - with the loss of 111 lives - while the boats were being slung out'. The British steamship RMS 'Falaba' was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-28. The Thrasher incident, so named because American Leon Chester Thrasher was one of those who died, nearly became the start of America's involvement in the war. From "The Great World War - A History" Volume II, edited by Frank A Mumby. [The Gresham Publishing Company Ltd, London, c1920]
