'Tower of London. The Bloody Tower', c1910. View of part of the Tower of London - historic palace, prison, fortress and armoury - which dates from the 11th century. 'This grimly named Tower was built in the 14th or 15th century, but was known as the Garden Tower until about 1600. On entering the visitor may observe the windlass by which the portcullis is worked, while the winding staircase ascends to the room where the young princes are said to have been smothered by Sir Walter Tyrrell at the instigation of Richard III.'
