The Embankment was designed by the civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette to accommodate his new sewer system and to provide a thoroughfare alongside the River Thames. In the centre is Cleopatra's Needle, an ancient Egyptian obelisk dating from c1500 BC, transported from Egypt to London in 1878. Postcard.
