Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1856-1929) was commander of the Russian armed forces until his cousin, Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), removed him and took personal command after the Great Retreat (a strategic withdrawal from the Galicia-Poland salient).
