Joffre (1852-1931) was declared the 'saviour of France' when the German advance was halted at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914. After Belgium was invaded by the Germans at the outbreak of World War I, King Albert (1875-1934) took personal command of her armed forces and received a hero's welcome when he returned to Brussels at the end of the war.
