'Then said Boaz to Ruth, go not to glean in another field', 1840. Biblical scene, from Ruth 2: 8: 'Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:'. The landowner Boaz deliberately leaves grain for the widow Ruth, who gleans (collects leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been harvested), to provide for herself and her mother-in-law, Naomi, who was also a widow.
