'Landru - Bluebeard of France!', 1921, (1933). French serial killer Henri Désiré Landru (1869-1922), nicknamed 'The Bluebeard of Gambais', killed at least ten women (and one man) between 1915 and 1919. The police concluded that Landru had met or been in romantic correspondence with 283 women during the First World War. He was tried for 11 murders, found guilty and executed by guillotine on 25 February 1922. The true number of his victims, whose remains were never found, was almost certainly higher.
