Cloisters, Heiligenkreuz Abbey, Lower Austria, c1935. Heiligenkreuz Abbey (Abbey of the Holy Cross), founded in 1133, is the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world. The abbey, in the village of Heiligenkreuz, is so named because it contains a supposed relic of the 'True Cross'. The cloisters date from the 13th century. From "Österreich - Land Und Volk", (Austria, Land and People). [R. Lechner (Wilhelm Müller), Vienna, c1935]
