'Laud', (1573-1645), 1830. William Laud (1573-1645) English churchman, appointed Archbishop of Canterbury from 1633 during the rule of Charles I. The Long Parliament accused him of treason, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London during the English Civil War and beheaded in 1645. From "Biographical Illustrations", by Alfred Howard.
