A Selection of Hexandrian Plants, belonging to the natural order of Amaryllidae and Liliacae: Tiger Lily, 1831-1832. The late 18th century saw the development of colour printing, a laborious process in which the image is built up from separate plates for each colour. Applying Newton’s theory of colour, a plate was prepared for each of the three primary colours (blue, yellow, and red) as well as for a darker colour (usually black, to provide a unifying background tone).
