Autumn Landscape, 1879-80. The spontaneous, sketchlike quality of this landscape suggests that Twachtman drew en plein air directly onto prepared copper plates. The almost bare limbs of the trees at the center evoke the transition from autumn to winter. Balancing the composition in the lower left is a small figure, possibly the artist, almost hidden in the grass.
