Bust of Christ, c. 1470-1500. Sculptors working inside the great master’s studio produced this bust and many others like it from popular models by Verrocchio to supply the enormous market in and around Florence for affordable devotional sculptures for private use. Verrocchio was originally trained as a goldsmith in Florence. By the final decades of his life he had earned a reputation as Florence’s greatest bronze sculptor. His style had much influence both before and after his death; his greatest pupil was Leonardo da Vinci.
