Female Figurine, c. 400-100 BC. Burials from ancient villages near Chupicuaro, Guanajuato contain hundreds of pottery offerings. These include brightly coloured vessels and solid figurines decorated with appliqué and incision. The cheerful, informal figurines were probably intended to provide the dead with companionship, and to remind them of their loved ones. Nude but for her jewelry and headdress, this tiny figurine bears an expression of comical dismay.
