Landscapes: Woman in a Striped Dress (Paysage: Femme en robe à rayures), 1898. Almost indistinguishable from the patterned landscape surrounding her, a woman in a striped dress strolls through a spring landscape. In this image, Roussel explored a decorative abstraction that blended figure and ground into a common field of colour. Roussel’s aesthetic in his suite of six lithographs, Landscapes, is similar to Edouard Vuillard’s use of colour and abstraction in his Landscapes and Interiors: Across the Fields (elsewhere in this gallery).
