Leaf from a Cocharelli Treatise on the Vices: Accidia and Her Court, c. 1330-40. This popular treatise on the vices uses personifications or imaginary persons to embody abstract qualities. Here, Queen Accidia represents Melancholy or Boredom and attempts to find diversion in gaming tables and pets or by watching workmen in the loggia above. The miniature is noteworthy for its depiction of richly adorned textiles and jeweled headresses imitative of the Islamic world.
