Pinning the Hat, c. 1898. Pinning the Hat was a favorite subject for Renoir, since several versions exist. The earliest is a painting of 1893, followed by variations in pastel, etching, and lithography. Renoir's models were Julie Morisot (daughter of Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot [1841-1895]) and Julie's cousin. Much of the superb printing during this golden age of colour lithography was due to the skill of the expert printer Auguste Clot. While Renoir drew the design on the stone that was printed in black, he coloured a proof with watercolour as a guide for Clot, who then prepared separate stones for each colour.
