Portrait of Susanna Rose, 1862. Sandys’s meticulously rendered portrait of Susanna Rose (1795-1870) revels in its truth to detail. The coat of arms and the luxurious display of fabrics, fur, and lace recall Dutch, Flemish, and German art from the 1400s to the 1600s (such as the adjacent Janssen van Ceulen portrait), which greatly inspired Sandys. The artist’s intense colour and sensuous handling, however, was entirely contemporary. Sandys exhibited this portrait at the Royal Academy in 1863.
