Saint John the Baptist, late 1500s. Saint John wears the hair shirt he fashioned during his retreat into the wilderness to live humbly. He clenches a device of baptism, a shell to pour the water. This Venetian bronze’s rough surface contrasts to the nearby work of the Florentine sculptor Piamontini.
