Saint Peter of Alcántara, c. 1663-1670. Saint Peter of Alcántara (1499-1562) advocated for the poor in Spain. He also led a reform movement within the Franciscan order and wrote many influential spiritual texts. The bare feet recall the monk's famous walk to Rome seeking approval from the pope for convents to serve Spain's destitute. Simultaneously, he receives divine inspiration from God—a combination of ecstasy and pain that fueled his writing, according to his disciple, Saint Teresa of Avila.
