Twelve-sided Ewer with Sphinxes and Humanheaded Inscriptions, 1300-1350. Sphinxes in interlacing bands on an arabesque ground connect inscriptions with human heads which only appear on metalwork. Known as animated script, it developed in northeast Iran during the 1100s and migrated westward.
