In the foreground are the bodies of Sergeant Hamilton Fish and Private Stevens of the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, killed in the Battle of Las Guasimas. Behind them is a meeting of US officers and war correspondents: journalist Richard Harding Davis, General Henry Ware Lawton, General Leonard Wood, and (future president) Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt.
