'The West Branch of Bellows Falls', 1874. The Tucker Toll Bridge over the Connecticut River at Bellows Falls, Vermont, USA. 'Standing on the bridge which crosses the river, one looks down into the foaming flood below. The gorge at this point is so narrow that it seems as if one could almost leap over it. Through this chasm the water dashes wildly, striking with prodigious force on the rocks below, and by the reaction is driven back for quite a space upon itself. In a distance of half a mile the water descends about fifty feet'.
