'Natural Bridge, North Adams', 1874. Rock arch near North Adams, Massachusetts, USA. 'that curious object, the Natural Bridge, a rare freak of the waters of a pretty brook among the rocks - itself a scene for the painter...The Natural Bridge is a vast roof of marble, through and under which a mere brook has yet contrived, with incessant, fretting toil, to excavate a tunnel - a passage five or six yards wide, and ten times as long. This wonderful viaduct is loftily arched over the torrent, and displays its marble sides and ceiling sometimes of a pure white, but oftener with strange discolorations, as of mineral stains or lichen-growths'.
