'Lower Falls, Portage', 1874. Waterfalls on the Genesee River at Portage, New York State, USA. The name of the town stems from Native American canoeists carrying their craft round ('portage') to avoid going over a series of three waterfalls in the Genesee River gorge. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]
