'Chapel Beach', 1872. Waterfall and Chapel Rock (known as La Chapelle by early European explorers), Lake Superior, Michigan, USA. 'This rock-chapel is forty feet above the lake...a temple, with an arched roof of sandstone, resting partly on the cliff behind, and partly on massive columns, as perfect as the columned ruins of Egypt...the continuous wash of the water in and out through holes in the sides is like the low, opening swell of an organ voluntary...A manitou dwelt in this chapel...On the chapel-beach the Indians performed their rites to appease him'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]
