'A mighty monument to pagan brutality - the Colosseum (E.) at Rome', c1909. Flavian amphitheatre in Rome, used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, built of travertine limestone. Begun under emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. To be viewed on a Sun Sculpture stereoscope made by Underwood & Underwood.
