'Model of ruins of Pompeii, National Museum, Naples, Italy', c1909. Pompeii was an ancient Roman city buried under 4 to 6 m of volcanic ash in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Model designed on the initiative of Giuseppe Fiorelli, supervisor of the excavations of Pompeii from 1861 at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
