'Placard Erected by Mr. Rhodes', 1900. Cecil John Rhodes was a British businessman, mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Prime Minister of Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. He went to Kimberley at the onset of siege during the Second Boer War and was instrumental in the defence of the city. From "South Africa and the Transvaal War, Vol. IV", by Louis Creswicke. [T.
