'Aeneas Silvus Piccolomini at the Court of James I of Scotland', (1946). In 1435, Italian cardinal Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464, later Pope Pius II) was sent on a secret mission to Scotland. Here he is recieved by King James I at his court in Edinburgh. The Renaissance palace and view from the loggia look rather more Italian than Scottish. After a fresco painted in 1503 by Bernardino Pinturicchio, in the Piccolomini Library, Siena, Italy. From "Life Among the Scots", by Janet Adam Smith. [Collins, London, 1946]
