'Marlborough at the Battle of Oudenarde, 1708', (1944). Tapestry depicting British military leader John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (on a white horse) at the Battle of Oudenarde, fought in July 1708 at Oudenaarde in Flanders, during the the War of the Spanish Succession. The battle was fought between the forces of Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire on the one side and those of France on the other, and resulted in a victory for the allies. This is one of the Victory tapestries commissioned by the Duke to commemorate his victories at Blendheim, Ramilles, Oudenarde and Malplaquet. The tapestries were designed by Lambert de Hondt and woven by Judocus de Vos in Brussels. They are part of the collection at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. From "British Soldiers', by S. H. F.
