Tale of the Heiji Rebellion (1159-60) between rivals Minamoto no Yoshitomo and Taira no Kiyomori. Emperor Nijo and his empress consort escape from the imperial palace, where they had been captive and are moved to the Rokuhara district of Kyoto.
