Shaka Triad and the Sixteen Rakan, 14th century. Buddha Shaka preaching to a group of bodhisattvas, arhats, and historical Japanese figures at Vulture Peak. Below are two historical Japanese figures, crucial to the development of Japanese Buddhism: in a red robe is Shotoku Taishi (572-622), an imperial prince and early patron of Buddhism, and, on the right, the monk Kukai (774-835), founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism.
